In the 17th century on occasions, Samuel Pepys visited Ewell and mentioned in his diary is the area between 1663 and 1665, in which he spells it Yowell. Beside The Spring pub, Ewell has an unusually large telephone exchange fitted, during the later years of the Cold War, with underground facilities designed to survive a nuclear conflict.
